Out the gate, follow Strawberry Creek, about twenty unhurried minutes to the village center, all pine shade and water sound. Go before breakfast; come back with donuts.
Most wilderness trails ask for a free day permit, and trailhead lots want an Adventure Pass. Both live at the San Jacinto Ranger Station, listed under Trails & Nature, along with honest advice about snow, snakes, and parking. Adventure Passes are also sold at Nomad Ventures in the village.
